During my journeys through Western Sichuan and Northern Xinjiang in 2021 and 2022, the captivating presence of people, breathtaking landscapes, and unfolding events absorbed me to such an extent that I often lost track of time and value of meaning. I found myself questioning the merits of reaching for my camera. Susan Sontag, in her discourse on photography, suggests that taking a photograph itself becomes an event, one that intervenes in the ongoing moment and reminds us that when we raise the camera, we can no longer fully participate or intervene in what is happening.

Behind the lens, the photographer silently weaves a world, a realm of their creation. Yet, it is precisely this ability that eludes me, for I am fully immersed in the world unfolding before me, rendering me unable to detach myself and observe with detached composure. Perhaps, I may never embody the essence of a proficient photographer, for once I am immersed in this moment, my camera remains still.
