Title
Winding Ridges
Description
Winding Ridges is a memoir by Liu Jianzhang (1916–2004), a rural
teacher from Northern Shaanxi, China. It captures a turbulent yet
intimate personal history swept up in the tides of China’s warlord
conflicts, political strife, and the emergence of a new social order.
In our design, we visualized cultural motifs of Northern Shaanxi, such as loess (yellow earth) and traditional paper-cutting. The narrative is structured around the four names the author used across his life stages, with distinct lightweight colored papers distinguishing each chapter.
Complementing the linear narrative, we integrated the perspective of his wife, Li Mingying, through a specialized insert inspired by her hand-embroidered wallet—a poignant relic of her personal journey.
