Title

discipline archive

Description

Judgments of normality are present everywhere, imposed not just by individual censors but by entire societies. We automatically regulate ourselves to behave “correctly,” forcing ourselves to conform to social norms, without questioning the power structures that determine our reality. Discipline Archive is a review of my disciplined life, offering a perspective to understand the relations between ego and power systems. Are humans willing to be self-controlled? If so, do I have the courage to be different?

Discipline Archive, my MFA thesis exhibition, showcased my exploration of discipline and conformity. I suspended 24 deconstructed regulation-object posters using fishing line, symbolizing a "24-year path of discipline." Green-colors on the prints represented concepts "normal" and "qualified," intensifying as they reflected my gradual assimilation to social norms. Behind the posters, a video projection, "Parallel Universe," merged photos from my 2022 quarantine and sheep farms in Maryland. The projected light, obstructed by fishing line, created prison-like bars, symbolizing societal constraints. My body is also a jail.

Adjacent to the hallway, another artwork explored individual identity and control. ID photos on canvases, adorned with ear tags, hung on a fence. In addition, I provided DuPont paper wristbands bearing identical numbers, allowing the audience to wear their own metaphorical "shackles."
