Title

The Shadow of Metaphor

Description

This project explores the metaphors surrounding three common and deadly diseases—heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's—that have affected the author's family. It delves into how these illnesses are enveloped and implied within everyday language and visual contexts. The Shadow of Metaphor examines how the contexts in which patients exist, including linguistic and visual environments, influence and alter their perceptions of their diseases, bodies, and souls. In everyday life and various works of art, the use of metaphors about disease is prevalent, serving both as a helpful means of understanding medical terminology and as potential instruments of prejudice. These metaphors act as bridges in communication between patients, their families, and doctors, facilitating comprehension. However, they can also be wielded to belittle and stigmatize certain groups or situations.

As someone who often lives as a patient, the author is sensitive to these metaphors, experiencing both understanding and discomfort. While acknowledging the importance of certain metaphors as communication tools, The Shadow of Metaphor seeks to raise awareness about their potential negative effects on patients. The goal is not to eliminate metaphors but to foster a deeper understanding of their impact on individuals facing health challenges.
